The residence permit according to section 25 (5) of the German Residence Act is issued initially for a period of maximum 6 months - this is normal, as far as I know. I am afraid that I can not make reliable predictions whether the immigration office will extend the residence permit for a longer period after these 6 months. I can not share experiences here. However, it is definitely good to hear about your friend's efforts which will make a good impression on the immigration office as well.
