Usually your work contract contains a paragraph about the period of notice. If not, there is a statutory period of notice that is 4 weeks (28 days) (in accordance with ยง622 BGB). This applies to all employees and not just Germans or asylum seekers. So if your employer gave you notice on time, it is lawful for him to lay you off this way, as far as I can see.

Thanks, @Thor. This is about my husband. He is working for a German startup for almost 6 months now. And he told me that tomorrow he has a meeting with upper management about his Probezeit. I am just hoping that everything will be fine.
I'm so sorry. I just no one to talk to at the moment.
Thanks for clarifying the matter. And don't worry, this website was made to ask questions, so there is no need to apologize.

It's not unusual that a company lets a new employee do a "Probezeit" first to see if s/he is fitting the requirements of said job. During Probezeit there is a shorter period of notice (14 days) and the employer doesn't have to explain why they don't want to employ the respective person any longer.

I don't know the exact conditions of your husbands work contract, so I can't tell you what the management wants to discuss with him. But it is also possible that they tell him that they want to employ him and give him a proper work contract. I wish you and your husband all the best :)
Thank you, @Thor!
