my understanding is that it is theoretically possible to have more than one residence permit in Germany. From this I conclude that a marriage in the USA, if valid in Germany, does not affect your partner's current residence permit. On the contrary, the competent German authority might grant him a residence permit with regard to this marriage, provided that the relevant requirements are met.
