Dear @Chappy,
I recommend you turn to a local refugee advisor to guide you through this process. He/Her can also give you advice on language courses.
About working permits: Generally spoken: As long as you don't have a resident permit, you have to apply for work permit. You fill a form (application for work permit) and a so called "Stellenbeschreibung" (description of the job, the employer usually fills it) and hand it to the Ausländerbehörde. They send the Stellenbeschreibung to the agency for work, they approve or deny, after that you get your work permit just for this one job. Takes usually a couple of weeks.
If you have the residence permit through your child, you'll have a work permit automatically.
For further details on your special case: Please google "Flüchtlingsberatung" and the place where you live.
Good luck!
Regards
mbeon-Ruth
