Hi, I am a Danish citizen and living in Denmark.

My boyfriend is Gambian and is an asylum seeker in Germany. His case was rejected by the court and he is now about to appeal. We want to marry and afterwards apply for family reunion in Denmark. We have to get married in Germany first, how is the procedure? And can they deny him the right to get married because he is an asylum seeker? He have fulltime work for 2 years now and been in Germany for 6 years. He have also been taking some courses for skilled work. Hope some can advice on this.

Hi @Forrest,

thanks for reaching out to the wefugees community. To marry in Germany, the following documents are needed:

  • A valid passport
  • An official birth certificate
  • Proof of a minimum of 21 days of continuous residence in Germany (this can be a Meldebescheinigung issued by the local Anmeldeamt)
  • Proof of being single (Ledigkeitsbescheinigung)
  • Birth certificates of children (if any) the couple may have had together
  • The required application and questionnaire from the Standesamt

Often one or both partners may have to provide the following depending on their particular circumstances and the requirements of the local magistrate's office:

  • Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) (Befreiung vom Ehefähigkeitszeugnis)
  • Marriage certificates from previous marriages
  • A financial statement
