What is the Vermieterbescheinigungen?

can someone explain to me what a "Vermieterbescheinigungen" is?
Do I need it?
Where do I get it?

Welcome to Wefugees and thank you for your question.

A Vermieterbescheinigung is a form of rent certificate that a tenant will receive from his/her landlord. According to the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) a landlord has to provide a Vermieterbescheinigung within the first two weeks of a tenancy.

Moreover, the Vermieterbescheinigung is required for the registration at the Einwohnermeldeamt (local town hall), which is what you ought to do within the first two weeks of your move into a new place. In some cases, not registering your new address can lead to penalty fees.

thanks a lo. So I will ask my landlord for it and go to the "Einwohnermeldeamt". But I thought they only need my "Mietvertrag" for it? Is it the same?

my pleasure. They are two different things. A Mietvertrag is a contract signed by both tenants and landlord and contains information about rent prize etc. The Vermieterbescheinigung, on the other hand, is a document signed by the landlord only and certifies that the tenant has moved into the flat/house.

As far as I know the Einwohnermeldeamt won't register a change in address if you only bring a Mietvertrag. They want to see the Vermieterbescheinigung as well. I don't know if this is handled differently in different citys/federal states, but e.g. in Berlin you have to bring said Vermieterbescheinigung to your appointment.
