Dear Lawrence,

Welcome to the Wefugees Community and thank you for reaching out to us.

For the time being, you are most probably not eligible yet for a permanent residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis). But this is hardly possible to know based on the information you provide.

If you are holding a student residence permit (§16b), only half of the years with this temporary residence permit "count" towards the PR minimum requirements (usually a stay of 5 years). For students, it is usually the easiest and fastest way to complete the studies and work as a skilled worker in the same field for around 2 years.

However, if you came to Germany as a refugee (and got recognized) the period of the asylum procedure might count here as well.

In case you switch your residence permit in the future to one as a family member of a German citizen (§28) - different rules may apply. I highly recommend you to discuss the best option at a migration counselling office.

I hope this helps for a first overview and all the best,

Meike
