Here you can ask, answer and find questions surrounding the topic: arriving in Germany
Hi, i hope you all are doing great apart of our little worries.

I like to ask you. I am a german born citizen and I live in Germany. I like to marry a Uk refugee. Little story about him: he came about 17years ago to UK under work permit from SRI Lanka. While he wanted to extend his work visa the company got closed and seized and he received after 2months his expired passport. He later went to renew it with the full information of what has happend but they told him he over stayed and rejected him. Meanwhile in 2009 there was this genocide of Singhalese vs. Tamils. UK requested him to go back to his country. He couldn’t move back to SL, due political reasons, fear of being tortured again by the opposite party and all of all his family members are in UK. He now put a fresh claim to be a asylum seeker, Jan 2018. Now my question. We like to get married and want to live in Germany. Can I call him over to Germany with my citizenship even he is a asylum seeker in UK? I can’t marry him in UK reason his passport is expired and register office or churches wanted a valid passport. We have requested the home office in UK with a written letter to give us authorization to the register office still there is no answer(already 8months now). What can we do in this case? It is really frustrating.

Thank you for your time and help, much appreciated

Dear @C82,

Thank you for sharing your situation with the Wefugee Community!

I am afraid that he will not be allowed to leave the UK while he is in his asylum process. However, in order to marry in Germany you also need to hold a valid passport. Please find more information on marrying in Germany in the following blog:

I recommend you to contact the "Verband binationaler Partnerschaften" ( - I am sure they have more experience in this field.

Good luck for you both!

Kind regards,
