Please can my brother who is in Africa come to Germany with a jobseeker visa?  What are his chances If he arrives here and couldn't get a job at the stipulated time? Will his visa be extended or will he have to go back to Africa? Many thanks

Dear @Debbie,

Welcome back to the Wefugees Community and thank you for reaching out to us again.

I remember that you raised a very similar question some time ago (in 2022) and I recommended (and I still do) to check the information at "Make it in Germany" on this. However, something has changed in the legislation in this regard - so it is good that you raise this topic again. In June 2024, the German government introduced the so-called "Job Seach Opportunity card" - they are issued for a maximum of one year. The card allows you to search for gainful employment in Germany, i.e. you can seek employment or become self-employed. For its requierements please follow the link mentioned above. Unfortunately, it is still not easy to obtain a respective visa: Important aspects are that you can secure your livelihood and that your qualifications (vocational training/University degree) are officially recognised in Germany. The latter is a process I recommend to initiate as early as possible (as it can take some time). Also being able to prove German language skills can be crucial. Whether your brother can stay in Germany once he obtained the visa but struggles to find a qualified job here is difficult to assess - I think this will depend on many factors. Maybe a visa for vocational training (Ausbildung) is also an option for him?

Where is your brother now? In case he is in Nigeria or in Ethiopia, I can recommend to contact the counsellors of the project "prepared and successful migration to Germany" by the German Diakonie (Baden und Württemberg). Please see their website for more information.

I hope this helps and please don't hesitate to get back to us with any further questions.

All the best,

Meike
