I got a letter which accuses me (wrongly!) of a copyright violation ("Abmahnung") - What can I do?

Question

I got a letter today that one of the  Rechtsanwalt Maximilian Mayr from München is that I have downloaded a movie but I did not do anything like this and written in the letter that I will pay 900 Euro. What I should do can give any good advice I can not even have money .

Welcome back to the Wefugees community and thank you for reaching out to us. 

For me it actually sounds much like a fake letter. I think you should consult the “Verbraucherzentrale”, for example. 

Maybe that “lawyer“ and those sorts of letters are well known as fraud attempts already. 

I will also try to make some research on it. Maybe some other members of the communities are more experienced and can share information.

Hello @Hinda,

as Meike already pointed out, the letter you received might be a fake letter. You can easily check this: Did they describe the circumstances, e.g the exact time you were supposed to have downloaded the movie or your IP-address?

If you are not sure what to do, you can send a copy to the consumer care service and ask them for clarification. They offer online office hours for such cases, f.e. here: https://***.meine-verbraucherzentrale.de/DE-BY/emailberatung
