My friend's elderly mother (an Iranian citizen) is in Germany on a visitor visa.  Due to the situation in Iran, it is not safe for her to return.  If she requests asylum, would her son be responsible for all of her financial costs while she waits for her hearing?  Can she get medical coverage?  He can provide housing but is concerned about her other exenses (especially medical).

Dear @lillyahoo,

Welcome to the Wefugees Community and thank you for reaching out to us.

Did your friend sign a declaration of Commitment for his mother? If he did, he needs to cover all costs that the German state could incur from the visitor in question for up to five years, including:

  • Cost of living (food, clothing, etc.)
  • Cost of accommodation
  • Cost of medical care
  • Cost of a possible deportation

Once the visa has been issued, you cannot withdraw your declaration of commitment anymore. Please see Handbook Germany's website for more information (in various languages).

In any case, I recommend your friend to get in touch with a counselling office to discuss the details and potential options for him and his mother (there might be exceptions or hardship regulations I am not aware of). Also don't hesitate to get back to us with any further questions.

All the best,

Meike
