How do we say hello to someone? submitted by Tata in Home & Living

Hey I am in Germany now and I am not sure about the custom to say hello to someone? Like what is the gesture? Is it the same for everybody?

In terms of gestures:
You shake hands (with both men and women) on formal occasions, such as an interview at an Amt or for a job. You also usually shake hands upon first meeting someone, when you introduce yourself (both formal and informal occasions).
Otherwise there is not necessarily a gesture, just say hello :)
Hugs and/or kisses are usually reserved for close friends or relatives.

Also possible you might nod to someone while you say "hello" or instead of saying something. Always people look in eachothers eyes ! This is not usual in several countries. But looking face to face is normal here and ist not polite to look away, when you are talking to someone ore greeting someone. And normally we are smiling when we are greeting. This behavior also is usual between men and woman, even if they don't know each other. Otherwise you shouldn't exaggerate this smiling and looking in my eye ;-) Try to observe other germans, how they look and behave when they meet other people.
