Can I apply for asylum or refugee status through a student visa ?

Hello, This is Mohammed from Iraq, I have got national visa from Germany for six month as a student, and right now I'm in Germany. Can I apply for asylum or refugee here in Germany ??If I can, when is better to apply: before the expire of visa or after the expire ??

1. The best would be if you apply just as it expires- the next day.

2. Yes, you can apply for both.
